When I was looking for poems to set by the Russian poet, Anna Axmatova,
I realised (even with my basic Russian) that most translations I came across were surprisingly inaccurate. These are mine:-
For Odic force I have no need
Nor the charms of composing elegy
For me verse should untimely appear
From some inspired lunacy
If you only knew from what dregs
Poetry grows shamelessly
Like yellow dandelion by a fence
Like Burdock or ground-ivy
An angry shout, the smell of fresh tar
On a wall a cryptic mildew...
And verse pours from my heart
For my joy, and for you
You know I pine in subjection
O please Lord, death.
The painful recollection
Of Tver's parched earth
A crane sits on an old well head
Above, like a lid, clouds lowering
A gate creaks in the field
The smell of bread and yearning.
And this barren expanse
Where even the wind is leaden
And the condemning glance
Of silent sun-wrinkled women
Music sounded in the garden
Such inexpressible heartache
Oysters on ice on a plate
Fresh and smelling of the ocean
He said to me 'I am a true friend'
And strokes my dress.
How unlike a caress
Is the touch of that hand
Thus a cat or a bird you quieten
Or a rider a horse.
In his eyes quiet mirth
Under lashes, light and golden
A doleful voice and laboured
Came out of the spreading mist
'Heaven be blessed. This -
Is your first time with your beloved.'
He loved three things in the world
Songs in the evening, White peacocks,
And old maps of America.
He did not love the crying of children,
He did not love raspberry tea,
Nor hysterical women…
And to him I was wed.
My careworn breast was cold
Though my footsteps were light
And the glove for my left hand
I had put on my right
It felt as if there were many steps
Though I knew there were only three
Autumn, whispering through the maples,
Begged, 'Die with me,
I am betrayed by my malicious,
Unpredictable fate. 'I too
I reply 'My love, my precious,
I shall die with you.'
This is the song of a final meeting
Of the house I have one last sight
Only in the bedroom weakly
Shows a fitful yellow light
In it something miraculous burns
And my eyes with emotion close
It speaks to me as one
When others are afraid to approach
When the last of my friends have looked away
In my grave it remains with me
And sings like the first thunder of May,
As if flowers have begun to speak.
